How is the comparison of Gatsby with Christ ironic?

The death and perversion of the American Dream, and the fact that it is simply not obtainable for most.

Gatsby is revealed as a Christ figure using allusion throughout the novel.

He was a son of God-a phrase which, if it means anything, means just that-and he must be about His Father's Business... (104).

These continual references make Gatsby bigger than life and this is partially why the character is memorable and iconic.
