In Grapes of Wrath, what does the setting of the opening scene suggest?

The opening scene illuminates the conditions of the environment that move the plot of the story. In this scene, we see Oklahoma in ruins.... the land is dead, its people are starving.... it's a world of desolation and desperation. It is also a place of sorrow.
