The Good Master, a children’s novel by Kate Seredy, is a 1936 Newbery Honor Book. Kate’s father, Sandor Nagy, sends her to live with her uncle Marton who lives on a ranch outside the city of Budapest, Hungary. Although Kate initially misses certain aspects of the city, she soon finds herself enjoying her life in the country, partially fueled by a close relationship with her cousin Jancsi. Through various trials and tribulations Kate learns the values of common sense, compassion, and generosity.
