Who is Joshua (Josh) Lewis from The Glory Field?

Joshua was born into slavery in 1821 at the Live Oaks Plantation. According to his mother, Saran, Joshua has the "freedom dream". He falls in love with Neela, a slave on a neighboring plantation and marries her. Joshua fights for the Union Army and is wounded in battle. He never returns to Curry Island after his escape from the plantation.
