Fire is a major symbol in this book both literally and metaphorically. Fire is often a symbol for cleansing and rebirth. In the Glass Castle, fire means destruction. Anything positive that happens is balanced out by a destructive fire. Fire represents the parent's inability to create anything of lasting goodness for their children.
