Is Jonas' assignment as the next Receiver of Memory an honor or a punishment?
This depends on your point of view. In many ways it was a punishment. Jonas had to let go of his old life and live in relative isolation. On the other hand, he became aware about the darker side of the Elders and the society they live in. This causes Jonas to rebel. In this sense becoming receiver is an emancipation.
