In the book, The Giver, what did the family have to do in order for Gabriel to be allowed a second year of Nurturing?

In order for Gabriel to be allowed a second year of nurturing, each member of Jonas' family had to sign an agreement promising they would not become attached to him.... as possibly things would not work out. We will learn that this is far easier said than done.
