Jonas' character changes as he begins to become more aware about himself and his community. Jonas becomes more complex: he sees stagnation and a sense of superficiality about everything the community teaches. After Jonas gets his receiver assignment, he becomes more estranged from his past. He experiences an inner conflict because his old identity clashes with his new enlightened self. Jonas feels isolated but knows that he cannot go back to the way things used to be. Jonas' final change comes where he knows he has to leave the community with Gabe in order to bring about lasting change.
