Who is Marmaduke Van Swearingen, AKA Blue Jacket from The Frontiersmen: A Narrative and what is their importance?

Marmaduke, better known as Duke, is captured by Indians when he and his brother are out hunting. Duke's brother is released when he promises to be adopted into the tribe. Over the course of the novel, Duke becomes a part of the tribe and is renamed Blue Jacket.
