Who is Apollo is the book, The Friend: A Novel?

Apollo is “you’s” dog, whom the unnamed narrator inherits after “you’s” suicide. Apollo is a Great Dane found by “you” in a park. Presumably, Apollo was abandoned by his owner. Once “you” adopts Apollo, Apollo shows unconditional loyalty to him. After “you’s” death, Wife Three says having Apollo is too painful because “you can’t explain death to a dog,” which means Apollo spends all his time waiting for “you” to return (36). Moved by Apollo’s unconditional loyalty, the unnamed narrator takes Apollo into her home, saying “love deserves better” (38).
