Why is getting kicked off the basketball team eventually a positive thing for Joan?

Being kicked off the basketball team seems like a tragedy for Joan at first. However, if she were not kicked off the team, she would not have the time to write the essay that got her a chance to go to New York City with the Freedom Writers.
