How does Jan de Hartog use imagery in The Fourposter?

The primary image in the play, The Fourposter, is the four-poster bed itself. Its presence continuously looms in the middle of the set, reminding the audience that there is a firm base anchoring Michael and Agnes's marriage, in spite of the changes that occur over the course of thirty-five years.
