Who is Second Lieutenant Doctor Diana Alsever from The Forever War and what is their importance?

Second Lieutenant Doctor Diana Alsever is the lead doctor under Mandella's command. Although a self-proclaimed homosexual, she makes a pass at Mandella one evening while drunk. It is implied that she saves Mandella a lot of inevitable complications by secretly killing a private who attempted to assassinate him. Diana, along with Mandella and Charlie, travel to a planet called Middle Finger to find Marygay after the war, where she and Charlie end up getting married. Diana delivers Mandella and Marygay's first child.
