Who is Rogers from The Forever War and what is their importance?

Rogers is Mandella's first sack-mate at the beginning of the book. He describes her as feminine, yet "a little butch." She is the only one to say anything about how the majority of their training is "silly" and she is also promoted slightly faster than her counterparts on their second campaign.
