Who is Ameriel from The Floating Island and what is their importance?

Amariel is a merrow (mermaid). She is the first friend Ven meets on his journey, and perhaps the one that helps him the most, aside from Char. Amariel saves Ven's life by keeping him afloat until he can be rescued. She is described as curt and demanding.
