How does Ven get hit by Whiting in this section?

After Whiting accuses Ven of stealing his ring, Ida steps forward and tells him he is a liar - Ven is not capable of stealing anything. In response, Mr. Whiting raises his hand to hit her, but Ven is too quick and pulls her out of the way, Mr. Whiting's open hand striking his cheek instead.
