Friendship is a recurring idea in the story. The Firm abounds with interesting friendships. Mitch's brother, Ray, is incarcerated for much of the book. Generally, society has a hard time feeling empathy with and connecting to inmates. The reader learns right away, however, that Ray is a good guy and capable of friendship. While in prison, Ray befriended Eddie Lomax.
