Who is Charles Dickens and why does the author cite him in "My Dungeon Shook"?

Charles Dickens was an English writer of the Victorian Era. He is well known for his novels A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, and Great Expectations. Baldwin cites him by saying that his nephew was born in a ghetto that is not so far removed from the settings described by Dickens.
