The source of the author's resentment for his father is that his father had an intense, fear-driven resistance to what might be described as breaking prescribed patterns of behavior. A black man's behavior, a son's behavior, a citizen of Harlem's behavior - it seems that, at least in the author's experience, his father had strict codes of what should be done and said, and how, and why, in every facet of existence, codes that in the author's mind and heart were limitations
