Jonathan lies to the tavern keeper about having his father's permission to fight because he thinks his father is being overly protective of Jonathan since his father was wounded. Even though the family has heard nothing from Jonathan's older brother since he left, the fact that he was allowed to go to war makes Jonathan feel he should be allowed as well.
