Who is Ohnine from The Fifth Sacred Thing and what is their importance?

Ohnine is Bird's leader in his miltary unit. Unfortunately, he has a breakdown while on a mission with Bird, something that causes him to kill innocents. Madrone takes care of Ohnine after his breakdown, and during the novel's climax, Ohnine encourages his men to desert rather than fight.
