How does the author use foreshadowing in The Fifth Sacred Thing?

Chapter Seven does a lot to illustrate the interconnectedness of Maya and Madrone. The chapter moves from Maya being concerned for Madrone's life to Madrone stirring and realizing her role to take care of Maya, alongside the rest of the city. This chapter foreshadows Maya's death, or at the very least the connection between Madrone's life and the survival of the rest of the City.
