How does the author use foreshadowing in The Fifth Child?

In Part II, Harriet's comment that she feels like she is heavily bruised internally can be seen as metaphoric foreshadowing of the inner emotional "bruising" she experiences several times later in the narrative as the result of the treatment she receives at the hands of both Ben and the world.
