Rosa remembers her own father working nights when she was a child. She stayed at home with her mother, who spent her days finishing the buttonholes of men's shirts and worrying about Rosa's father. Her mother would tell the children tales of her own childhood before she came to America. She was strict and made sure they finished their homework, sat up straight, were careful, and made something of themselves.
