Why does Janie take a sip of Sarah-Charlotte's milk?

Janie is the only person in the school cafeteria who does not have milk because she is allergic to dairy products. Janie is thirsty after eating a peanut butter sandwich and she decides to wash it down with Sarah-Charlotte's milk.
