Siberia

The first stop in Siberia is the gypsum mines, where Esther's family lives in a converted schoolhouse. They are lucky and manage to secure a spot near the corner, giving them additional privacy.

In the fall, the family receives news that they can move into the village of Rubtsovsk. Their new home is a large barracks is a welcome one and the family enters the barracks, their new home. Soon after, they learn that they can find more suitable quarters, and the family moves into a small house with another couple.
