How does the author use foreshadowing in The Emperor's Children?

In Chapters Eight through Ten, the author shows three of the characters making plans, which foreshadows changes in the future. Bootie has decided to leave Watertown, Julius has picked a mate, and Murray is progressing on his secret manuscript.
