How does the author use foreshadowing in The Education of Little Tree?

In Chapter One, the author establishes the character of Little Tree, explaining why he has moved in with his grandparents after his mother's death. Told in first person from a child's perspective, there are implications of racism on the bus ride home. This foreshadows much crueler forms of racism ahead.
