Vicente Medrano is Don Juan Matus' eastern scholarly warrior and his oldest companion. Vicente introduces himself to Carlos on Zacatecas bench, where he joins his sisters, Carmela and Hermelinda. He is a fit, older man with fine features and a groomed white beard. He seems frail and almost effete. A non-Indian, Vicente had been a pharmacist before recruitment. He has a passion for botany and teaches everyone, including Don Juan, about medicinal plants. Nestor is his special student, destined to be like him.
