In my opinion, reading nonfiction books (memoirs) not only allows us to learn about people who are well known, but also about the people who have a real story to tell... people we may never have heard of. In reading the book, The Distance Between Us: A Memoir, we get a first hand look at the life of someone who spent their lives dreaming about living in the country that those of us who were born here often take for granted.
In addition, Reyna's story is also one of abandonment, being raised by family members who may or may not appreciate your presence in their lives. For Reyna, it was a negative experience. Her family didn't act like family, she was left behind to live in poverty with an abusive grandmother.
There are millions of stories that are important enough to be published and sold. On the other hand, there are few who can put their stories into words... to draw us into their world. Reyna is a talented writer; her story is important in that it can teach us so much about the immigration process.
