The Dictionary of Lost Words
The Scriptorium is where the majority of the people who are employed at the dictionary work. It is merely a shed at Sunnyside, Mr. Murray's home. The walls are lined with pigeon-holes into which the slips are sorted and stored. There are also many old books. Esme spends a good deal of time during her childhood under the sorting table at the Scriptorium, sometimes referred to as the Scrippy. She spends her time under there while her father is working, and she learns to recognize the mannerisms of the different men's legs under the table. She steals her first slip, the one containing the word, "bondmaid," when it falls beneath the table.
