Who is Mrs van Daan?

Mrs. Petronella van Daan is Hermann's wife and Peter's mother. Anne describes her as selfish, lazy, and whiney. After they move into the Annex, Anne’s mother realizes that Mrs. van Daan is hiding supplies that should have belonged to the entire group. Mrs. van Daan later becomes extremely upset when her husband insists that she must sell her fancy clothes, including fur coats, in order for them to help pay their way in the Annex.
