Describe symbolism in The Death of Woman Wang by Jonathan D. Spence

Fox spirits represent the spirit world. They are described in a story in Chapter 1 and in other places in the book. They are mischievous spirits of foxes that can take over the body of a human being, and need to be exorcised.
