Although an underlying theme in the novel, the concept of homosexuality is important in the novel, as it shows the power of relativity in conceptual understanding. First introduced by Deirdre and Nora in Chapter 10, the theme is expanded on by Mr. Dennis of Parents for Moral Schools in Chapter 12. Mr. Dennis and his organization express concern over the passages showing Jim and Huck naked on the raft together. Mr. Dennis suggests these passages indicate a homosexual relationship between the two individuals. Deirdre attempts to rationalize with Dennis, as does Matthew Griswold, to no avail.
