Is The Da Vinci Code's Robert Langdon truly a hero?

Robert is a likable character that could be described as a well-respected, sought after, intelligent academic - especially regarding history, art, and religion. I think he is heroic in terms of his particular expertise but we know very little about his personal life, thoughts, and convictions to define him any further.
