What is the theme in The Crucible by Arthur Miller?

Mass hysteria is certainly a big theme of the play. Ironically there is no witchery in the village and accusations are blamed on flimsy or non-existent evidence. It is paranoia and old grudges that fuel the hysteria of witch accusations in Salem.
