What is the history of Abigail and John Proctor's relationship?

John and Abigail had a brief relationship while she was employed in his home. When Elizabeth found out about their relationship, she immediately discharged Abigail from their employ. John ended their affair. These events occurred before the first act opens, but we quickly find out that Abigail still wishes for their affair to continue.... at any cost, even Elizabeth's life.
