There are quite a few characters who refuse to confess to phony witch charges, even to save their lives. Their name and their conscience means everything to them. They refuse to conform to the court of their religion that they are so invested in if it means giving up their convictions.In the end, John Proctor puts it best when he screams out, I have given you my soul; leave me my name!
