John Proctor is an honorable and honest man. He's made a mistake by having an affair with Abigail while she lived in his home as a servant. He lives with guilt everyday and allowed Abigail to seduce him because his marriage was unhappy and his wife distant. Some would see him as hypocritical; I see him as human.
