Fyodor Dostoevsky became the idol of Western literature despite his novels laying siege to Western values. He believed the materialism of Western science and mathematics was a denial of freedom. Drawing on his experience in prison, Dostoyevsky wrote the novel, Crime and Punishment, the story of a struggling soul. He later wrote The Brothers Karamzov, which accumulated the thoughts and impressions of his life.
