Gumsto is four feet ten inches tall, which is about average height for his clan of San peoples. He is described as a thin man with wrinkled skin and a yellowish brown complexion. Gumsto has small white teeth, and he is forty-three-years-old, although he is said to look more like ninety. He is the leader of a clan of twenty five members, which includes his wife Kharu and their son Gao. Gumsto is an extraordinary tracker.
