Who is Maria from The Counterlife and what is their importance?

Maria is Nathan's romantic interest and later his wife. She is twenty-eight years old, married to a neglectful husband, and she has a young daughter. Aside from the two Zuckerman brothers, Maria is the most significant character in the novel.
