Who is Caroline Lambert from The Corrections and what is their importance?

Caroline Lambert is the wife of Gary and mother of Caleb, Aaron and Jonah. She is a lawyer who works part time for the Children's Defense Fund. Her father, an anthropologist, died in a plane crash when she was eleven. Her mother remarried and lives in Laguna Beach.
