The Mississippi River forms what is now Louisiana over hundreds of years by overflowing riverbanks. Whenever the river changes its course, silt and sand are deposited in new places. As these deposits build up, water flows in new directions, creating new paths for the river to follow into the Gulf of Mexico. After major shifts, new bayous and levees are formed.
