In the story, A Way You'll Never Be, Nick returns to the scene of his injury and has a difficult time feeling comfortable in the battlefield environment. The images of death and injury around him remind him of his recent injury. He is unable to keep himself in control during his short reunion with the battlefield. The grasshoppers become a symbol for his instability as he looks for something safe to cling to during this difficult time.
