Lloyd moves into an abandoned signaling hut that is not well weatherproofed against the driving rains and harsh winds that besiege the island. The hut symbolizes Lloyd's isolation from the rest of the village; he voluntarily spends his time far away from the others so that he will not be distracted from his work. Significant, too, is the fact that the hut was constructed by the British while they were colonizing the island; Lloyd takes comfort in a colonial vestige rather than confronting the humanity and independence of the islanders.
