Why does Bernard end an affair in "The Rendezvous"?

In "The Rendezvous" Bernard and Rose encounter Ahmed, a native man that is injured and also serves as their guide. When Rose is disgusted and won't do anything to help, Bernard sees her as shallow and ends their relationship.
