The language of the narrative is, for the most part, used in a way that clearly suggests and/or evokes the nature of its central character, twelve-year-old Dara. Granted, the vocabulary employed seems substantially more advanced than that which would probably be used by such a person (i.e. young, probably quite uneducated) in such a set of circumstances. This is true even when the Afterword establishes the premise that it is, in fact, the adult Dara (probably only slightly more educated) telling the story of her younger self. Ultimately, however, accuracy of vocabulary seems to be less important than accuracy of experience - specifically, the experiences being portrayed and Dara's experience of feeling in response to what she sees, hears, and encounters.
