The woman realizes that the center of her story may be empty because she has not found the right thing to put there or because she has but is afraid to center either the man, the hurricane, or religion. She also thinks that the center may be empty because it reflects her reality and the things in her life that are almost significant but not fully significant--like the hurricane that threatens but does not strike, the man who thinks he is dying but who does not, and her religious calm that is not really belief.
