Jim Smiley, according to Wheeler, was a man who would bet on anything. "Why, if there was two birds setting on a fence, he would bet you which one would fly first." Unfortunately Smiley bets his frog could outjump any frog in Calaveras County. Unfortunately he bets a very unscrupulous individual and Smiley loses his money.
